Perfect team spirit and everything went perfectly until kilometer 120. At today’s Adria Mobil race in Slovenia over 181 kilometers, however, the Meiler brothers Lukas and Martin, as well as Max Kuen and Felix Meo did not have their best day. In the final only Roland Thalmann and Johannes Schinnagel were available for the team captain Filippo Fortin, the italian sprinter.

But the superiority of the competitors was too big and they could take advantage of this. The Dutchman Marijn van den Berg (CT Groupama FDJ) won, ahead of the Italian Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani CSF).

Next chance for redemption on April 4. Easter Sunday, the French classic La Roue Tourangelle UCI 1.1.

Team Vorarlberg fails to get off to a good start!

That cycling professionals are no „soft eggs“, was known. This was today at the Rad Bundesliga in Leonding (Upper Austria) also bitterly necessary. The race was shortened to 120 kilometers due to sub-zero temperatures (!!). At the start still dry, sets after a good racing hour also snowfall.

In the eleven-man leading group, among others, Maximilian Kuen as a lookout. At the back of the field Fortin, Thalmann and Co. take responsibility and control the race. However, Schinnagel (Virus) and Colin Stüssi (crash injury) had to be given up shortly before the start. Also Guerin and Moreno was sick at home.

Kuen gets some sprint and mountain points, but could not compete in the final. The Austrian Moran Vermeulen (Team Felbermayr Wels) wins ahead of the Germans Pirmin Benz (Rad net Rose) and Jonas Rapp (Hrinkow). Roland Thalmann came eighth as the best Team Vorarlberg rider.

It was not the desired result. Today, only the riders who can best cope with these extreme weather conditions were able to convince.

Team Vorarlberg with successful performance in Croatia!

Maximilian Kuen finishes E-Cycling League Austria in third place overall!

Today’s final stage of the 18th Istrian Spring Trophy from Marcana to Umag over 143 kilometers was only something for the tougher kind of professional cyclists. At the beginning of the stage still dry weather, but then rain and extreme cold with just above zero degree.

Top Team Vorarlberg performance in the last 14 days in Croatia!

Only by a few centimeters it was not enough for the podium today. Jakub Mareczko (ITA/Vini Zabu) could still push the bike forward on the line. This means that Filippo Fortin finished fourth today.

And yet – it was a very strong start to the season so far what the men from Team Vorarlberg have conjured up on the road. First and foremost Fortin’s stage win and the interim overall lead of the tour. Now it goes in the snow flurry in the direction of home!

Today`s winner is Mihkel Räim (LTU/Mazwoswe Polski) ahead of the German Henri Uhlig (Rad net). The overall victory goes to the Australian Finn Fisher-Black (Jumbo Visma).

However, he know to do the best with third place in yesterday’s final run of the E-Cycling League. He missed the victory of Stefan Kirchmair only by one second. The latter also wins the overall standings after nine races ahead of Moran Vermeulen and Kuen.

Alexis Guerin slips into the mountain jersey of the Istrian Spring Trophy in Croatia – Team Vorarlberg loses yellow today, but tomorrow again “all in” for Fortin!

After the great victory of Filippo Fortin yesterday, today was hard work. Because after the heavy crashes of Colin Stüssi, Roland Thalmann and Alexis Guerin half of the team was damaged. All riders were able to start the race, but with pain. Today’s stage was quite hard with a mountain finish after 165 kilometers.

“Team Vorarlberg Express” 120 kilometers from the front – Guerin climbs into the mountain jersey of the Tour!

As befits a team in the “yellow” jersey, all six riders around leader Fortin took team dictation of the stage and plowed ahead of the peloton. In the finale, the peloton splintered. Adria Moreno and Alexis Guerin are able to keep up with the leaders. Guerin takes numerous mountain points and takes over the overall mountain classification before the final stage!

In the fight for the day’s victory, Moreno and Guerin had to let their rivals go. Guerin complained of pain from yesterday’s fall. He finishes 20th in the stage, 23 seconds behind. The victory today, as well as the overall lead, goes to Italian Filippo Zana (Bardiani CSF). Savva Novikov (RUS/Kern Pharma) is second, Fisher Black Finn (AUS/Jumbo Visma Devo) third.

Alexis Guerin: “There would have been a lot in it for the overall classification. But if you are not 100% fit, then you have to accept this. Also my ailing team mates Thalmann and Stüssi fought great and finished the race. THEN we want to give everything again tomorrow for Filippo Fortin should it come to a sprint. I will try to bring my mountain jersey to Umag. Then we can be satisfied with our performance here in Croatia!”

Victory and overall lead for Filippo Fortin on the second stage of the Istria Spring Trophy – mass crash overshadows arrival in Porec!

Today’s second stage over 168 kilometers from Funtana to Porec showed how closely joy and sorrow are often connected. Team Vorarlberg sprinter Filippo Fortin (ITA) won the sprint in impressive style. He not only wins the stage, but is also the new leader of the 18th Istria Spring Trophy UCI 2.2!

Fortin after his victory: “I really wanted this victory. It was my chance as I was top set and I was able to take it. I am super happy to have taken the victory for Team Vorarlberg and me today!”

Stüssi, Thalmann and Guerin have to go down hard in mass crash!

In rainy weather and slippery roads, there is a momentous crash of 30 – 40 riders at very high speed two kilometers before the finish. Team Vorarlberg was perfect positioned around the 20th to 30th position when many riders went down in the immediate vicinity.

Florent Horeau (sporting director): “It was the worst crash I have ever witnessed. Riders screaming everywhere, it looked like a battlefield. Unfortunately Alexis Guerin, Roland Thalmann and Colin Stüssi were also in the middle of it. All of them complain about pain, with Colin Stüssi being the most severely affected. However, it seems that they have not suffered any broken bones. The race doctor will do further examinations. Then it can be decided who will be able to start again tomorrow!”

Good luck Guys!

Team Vorarlberg hopes that the fallen riders of the other teams didn’t get it too bad either – all the best to them!

The leading group was put before the finish, also under the pace dictation of Guerin, Stüssi, Thalmann, Meiler and Riegler.

Two kilometers before the finish a crash. The peloton splinters apart, Fortin has a good “nose” again today and gets through. However, he was on his own in the final today – Guerin and Co. were involved in the crash, but otherwise came through unharmed. In the difficult, uphill sprint in Porec, Italian Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani) wins ahead of Spaniard Enrique Sanz (Equipo Kern), and Tilen Finkst (Ljubljana).
