Team Vorarlberg celebrates historic victory! Colin Stüssi wins the overall classification of the 84th Volta Portugal UCI 2.1 – third place in the final time trial.
In front of an incredible crowd of spectators today the tenth and final stage in Viano de Castelo. The final time trial over 18 kilometers this evening brought the decision on the overall classification of the historic tour. Colin Stüssi was the last pro off the ramp with a 45-second lead over Henrique Casimiro (POR/Efapel).
Stüssi reeled off the time trial, not his special discipline, like clockwork. In the final ascent he rides best values and becomes third in the stage. Stage winner Txomin Iuaristi (SPA Euskatel-Euskadi) – Stüssi’s gap only 26 seconds. Thus the winner of the 84th Volta Portuagal is called – COLIN STÜSSI – TEAM VORARLBERG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He wins 1 min 4 sec ahead of Txomin Juaristi (Euskatel- Euskadi) and Antonio Carvalho (POR/Efapel) + 1.07.
Colin Stüssi: “Simply incredible. It is an indescribable feeling what is going on around me here right now. I gave everything today and was able to focus fully. Fortunately, the final was difficult, which played into my cards. The emotional world is upside down at the moment, for me and for my team colleagues, the coaches. From a sporting point of view, the most beautiful moment in my life!”
Strong also the performances of his Team Vorarlberg colleagues. Moran Vermeulen finished a strong tenth. Lukas Rüegg 13th, Jon Knolle 16th, Lukas Meiler 21st, Oscar Cabedo 33rd, Pirmin Benz 43rd!
Thomas Kofler – Team Manager: “From a sporting point of view, this overall victory is the most valuable in the 25-year team history, and the biggest success since the overall victory of the Tour of Austria in 2015 (Victor de la Parte). It was a victory of the whole team. Colin gave us this victory today. For this I thank him from the bottom of my heart, as well as the other riders, who this time are a bit in the background for their heroic effort, as well as the great support team. This project was made possible by our partners Arlberg Express, BALM-Beton, Hairstyling Dietrich and Elsass Bäcker – a big THANK YOU on behalf of the team!”
Colin Stüssi, the 30-year-old Swiss from Näfels, already in his fifth season with Team Vorarlberg, already convinced at this year’s Tour of Austria as overall third and best rider of a Continental team. With stage ranks 1, 2, 4, and twice on rank 7, he was especially in the second week the man of the hour. The cycling-crazy Portugal celebrated him and Team Vorarlberg frenetically.
Moran Vermeulen: “For me the most brilliant people I have ever seen. Again and again they shouted “grande, grande team” at us and were completely out of their minds. Of course they would have liked to see a winner from Portugal, but they were super fair to us. We drove ourselves into the hearts of the fans with passion!”
It was a mammoth project for Team Vorarlberg, for the professionals as well as for the support team. Be it athletically and also logistically. The 84th Volta a Portugal: in addition to the three Grand Tours, one of the longest and most difficult tours of the year with 1600 kilometers, 26,500 (!!) meters of altitude, ten stages, a time trial, a prologue, all this in the heat in southern Europe. But the seven professionals and the support team rocked it. With over 150 UCI points in the luggage it goes now back home. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU GUYS!
