Last stage of the Tour of Istanbul UCI 2.2 ends a great season 2023 for Team Vorarlberg!

 

Today’s fourth and final stage through the middle of the 15 million metropolis of Istanbul over 92 kilometers, also officially ended the very long, but unevenly successful season for the 13 professionals of Team Vorarlberg.

 

On the city course with a 40-kilometer approach and five final laps, only Jon Knolle and Pirmin Benz were still fighting for the flags for the Vorarlberg team after teammates Stüssi, Amann, Meiler, Vermeulen and Rüegg dropped out due to viruses. Benz, yesterday in a downhill without fault, but still crashed heavily, did a top job again today for Jon Knolle.

 

The 1.94 meter tall classic specialist, delivered a spirited race against the competition. In monsoon-like heavy rain, he placed properly in the final. Then some drivers build up in front of him, no more chance then to sprint for the front places. Winner from Belgium Timothy Dupont (Tarteletto).

In the overall ranking Jon Knolle finishes the tour in 16th place, Pirmin Benz is 44th.

 

Thomas Kofler – Team Manager: “Today’s finish in Istanbul was fortunately not a mirror image of the season. We were simply unlucky here, otherwise Lukas Rüegg would have been smiling from the podium. That is also part of cycling. Since March, the team has ridden consistently strong races. Especially the victory at the Tour of Portugal has welded the team together. My personal thanks go to the entire team, including the support staff and the back office team for an extraordinary season!”

 

Tomorrow, the team will fly home via Zurich. Jon Knolle and Lukas Meiler, who hopes to be fit again soon, will be at the start of the Münsterland Giro UCI 1.1 on Tuesday with the German national team.
