What a day! Furious Colin Stüssi storms in the first mountain stage of the Volta Portugal UCI 2.1 on stage and overall second place – Oscar Cabedo in tenth place!
Off into the mountains of Portugal! Today was a tough stage from Macao to Covilha. On the 184 kilometers there were 4700 (!) meters of altitude. At the final climb alone there were 1500 meters of altitude to climb to Covilha Torre.
On the approach to the final climb, the entire team lined up for Stüssi and Cabedo. An incredible team performance so that the captains could save valuable forces. Immediately in the final climb the teams Glassdrive, Caja Rujal and Burgos BH, as well as Stüssi and Cabedo increase the pace. Countless attacks had to be ridden until only four riders remained.
Colin Stüssi incredible at Covilha Torre – only Delio Fernandez stronger!
Two kilometers before the line the Spaniard Delio Fernandez (Team Tavira) attacks. Colin Stüssi continues his kick and gets as close as six seconds to Fernandez. The reward for this incredible performance – second place on the queen stage and second overall.
Oscar Cabedo also finishes tenth, 1min 23sec behind, and shows super happy.
Stüssi is now also leader of the combined classification!
“What Stüssi has achieved today is almost impossible to describe. The team has prepared everything perfectly. Today everything worked out against the home teams. The last mountain was so incredibly steep at the beginning. Stüssi did everything right today and deservedly rewarded himself. A chapeau to Stüssi and the whole team for this day today!” Werner Salmen Sports Director
Tomorrow, the next difficult mountain stage from Penemacor to Guarda over 168 kilometers and 3500 meters of altitude awaits, before the longed-for rest day on Wednesday. The riders and coaches will have to gather their strength for the last four stages.
